What is Expressive Art?

Expressive art is a method of using art for personal growth. It is a way of using art to communicate – with ourselves and with others. Art then becomes a language  which a person uses to explore, discover and challenge their inner and outer world.

The goal of expressive art is personal healing and growth. This art is for your own reflection and is NOT the same as art works created to exhibit. The work created is personal and not for public display.

Both the art work and the experience of making art are important.

Expressive art activities offer you an opportunity to:

  • Express yourself
  • Communicate your ideas
  • Explore, discover and challenge yourself
  • Achieve healing & growth

It is for anyone:

  • No art skill is required.
  • One does not need to be good at art to be able to use it.
  • Expressive Art can be used with individuals, families or groups. It is especially helpful with children and others who have difficulty verbalising problems, and expressing themselves.

Therapeutic art activities are based on particular themes.

How it works. Participants make their own individual art work to express themselves on a given theme. A suggestion is offered to people to get started. They choose how to make their own personal expressive work or are guided by some suggestions. A time of reflection and optional sharing offers the opportunity to be heard and hear from others.

  • Expressive Art Events are presented as ‘One-day’ or ‘Half-day’ workshops
  • Ideal for groups and a great idea to build staff moral in a non-threatening manner.
  • Popular topics include worry, clutter, loss, change, letting go, making decisions (or you may choose your own topic and let us plan a workshop to meet your need).
  • Events are presented at your organisation, or at a venue that you arrange.
  • Pricing is negotiated accordingly.
  • A fun and non-threatening opportunity for a family to use art in getting to know themselves and each other within the family context
  • Three sessions of art making specifically designed for family evaluation.
  • Get to know yourself and learn more about your family dynamics.

Workshops are a series, between 3 to 10 sessions on a specific theme.

For example:

  • Teacher workshops – helping teachers understand how to use Expressive Art with Children
  • Protective Behaviour Lessons that are taught using art
  • Expressive Art Events are presented by special request for members of support groups at their meetings.
  • These Events are facilitated in collaboration with organisations.
